The age-old dream of the human caravan is not to send astronauts in their orbit in outer space.. it is to send its individuals - every single individual in his orbit of self-realization. It is high time that this dream be thus reinterpreted. It is also the sacred duty of every man and woman to help intelligently reorientate human endeavour towards the culmination of this pilgrimage.

EDUCATION: A Letter Addressed to Mr. Osman Mahjoub
Dean Of The Institute Of Bakht AL-Ruda

Ustadh Mahmoud Muhammad Taha

This letter is written in December 24, 1958 and is translated into English by Dr. Mustafa Eljaili

University Education:

1. Other than being extremely expensive, the temporary university education is not very useful for the country. As a matter of fact, male and female graduates constitute a new class that is not concerned much with the poverty conditions that the nation suffers. Moreover, they are surely incapable of living in villages and rural areas to be able to understand the reality of their society, and thereafter, foster rural development. It would have been much better for the country to stop this present university education and instead invest what is spent on it, on the expansion and the concentration of the educational base in the manner I have outlined above.

2. When the education is mature enough, and the mental, health, social, and economic standards of people are considerably raised by virtue of efforts by our institute graduates (as I explained above), then we may evolve into a university education. Such an education originates from our realities, perception, culture, and the characteristics of our people, then meets with whatever it meets of western and eastern thoughts, digests them, and makes them genuine Sudanese. Only by then, can our education be labeled original and non-imposed; it can look to the eastern world, and the western, from a pure Sudanese point of view. By then, our graduates are humanistic, original, and Sudanese, working to bring happiness to their people, and to the whole humanity, as a natural, spontaneous, and non hypocritical behavior.
